The Rome sports family has lost a true sports legend with the death of Coach Thomas Barry (or T-Bar as he liked to be called). He set the bar high for others to follow, his example of giving his time, talent and resources for the betterment of his city, his Catholic faith and his family.
The directors of the Rome Sports Hall of Fame share the loss of their president felt by his family and friends, but know he gave a full lifetime helping others with caring and tireless humility and passion for the work God gave him to do. Tom believed it’s not what you did yesterday that was important; it’s what you can do today.
Basketball was the love of his life and was a big part of his personality. The choice that T-Bar made dictated the life he lived. Coach gave his life to coaching boys and girls basketball and football at Rome Catholic High; he was president of the Michelle Adey memorial fund, co-chairman of the Rome Sports Hall of Fame golf tournament and most recently president of the Rome Sports Hall of Fame.
His friends know that when Tom stood before God, he told Him that he used every bit of talent that was given to him. Coach was blessed by God with a great athletic family — and we know that God does not make a mistake.
Tom was a very successful person because he had perseverance, ambition and passion for every job he did along with a lot of heart, humor and talent. He proved in his 66 years that he could meet a challenge, overcome obstacles and pursue excellence to fulfill his dreams. His love, his laugh, the memories we all made together and the life lessons he taught to so many Rome student-athletes will also stay with us; they are his enduring gifts to all Romans.
T-Bar was an avid sports enthusiast — a player, coach and basketball junkie. We are proud to call Coach a true friend and colleague, who we all had great respect for personally and professionally. People will never forget how Tom Barry made them feel. Memories like this are treasurers that survive.
On behalf of the Rome Sports Hall of Fame, our hearts are filled with sadness and deepest sympathy. We will never forget the lessons he taught us all and the things he stood for. They were his gifts and his legacy.
Heroes get remembered, but legends never die, and Tom Barry was certainly a legend. We will never forget Tom’s decades of exceptional giving to the people of Rome and his inspiring contributions to all Rome athletes — for which he was inducted into the Rome Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2018.
His legacy is not just as a talented athlete or coach, but as a cultured and well-rounded citizen. All of these memories of Tom will always hold an important place in the Rome Sports Hall of Fame and the Evans family. The love we have will keep him close forever.
