RMH respiratory therapists complete advanced training

The respiratory therapists of Rome Memorial Hospital’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation program have completed an advanced training program to provide their patients with the most consistent, effective and up-to-date care.

The series of lectures were offered through a joint collaboration of the American Association of Respiratory Care and the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

Completion of the course by the pulmonary rehab team — Lynda Ferris, Patricia Parshall, Patrick Bonin and Elizabeth Demma — “reflects their ongoing commitment to continuing education to meet their patients’ needs,” the hospital stated.

The lectures covered critical areas involved in pulmonary rehab, including:

  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation
  • Pathophysiology and Assessment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Assessment and Management of Patients other than COPD
  • Pharmacologic Interventions
  • Supplemental Oxygen Administration
  • Exercise Assessment, Prescription and Training
  • Tobacco Cessation
  • Nutrition and Pulmonary Disease
  • Psychosocial Assessment and Intervention in Pulmonary Rehabilitation
  • Collaborative Self-Management
  • Outcomes Measurement in Pulmonary Rehabilitation

The Pulmonary Rehabilitation program at Rome Hospital celebrated its 10th anniversary in March. There have been more than 400 graduates from the program which focuses on helping people with lung disease take back control of their lives.

The program of education, instruction and exercise gave teaches patients the benefits of regular exercise in addition to breathing techniques to help control shortness of breath. Examples of the exercise include riding a stationary bike, walking on a treadmill or doing weight bearing exercises in a chair. Participants learn about how the lungs work and how lung problems affect breathing. Information on medications and equipment, such as how and when to take medications and how to use oxygen (if prescribed), is also part of the program.

The pulmonary rehab program is part of the hospital’s Cardiopulmonary Services. Medical director of the program is Dr. Mohammed Seedat. Eileen Luley is service line administrator for Cardiopulmonary Services. For more information about the program, call 315-338-7149.
