The date and time of the Rome Free Academy football team’s first game of the 2019 season has been confirmed. The team will open at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7 against Nottingham High in the Carrier Dome.

Unlike recent years, area schools will be starting their seasons after Labor Day, which falls on Sept. 2 this year.

All of Rome’s other games will be 7 p.m. Friday starts except for a Saturday afternoon game against longtime rival Proctor High in Utica in mid-October.

The Black Knights are in the Class AA-2 Division again, with West Genesee, Proctor High of Utica, Baldwinsville, Cicero-North Syracuse and Fayetteville-Manlius.

After the non-leaguer against Nottingham, Rome will play another non-league game on Friday, Sept. 13, at Indian River, north of Watertown. The Black Knights then start their league schedule with two home games, first against C-NS on Sept. 20 and then against Baldwinsville on Sept. 27. C-NS won the AA-2 last year, going 5-0 in the league and 11-1 overall.

RFA is on the road for the next two league games, against F-M on Oct. 4 and then a Saturday afternoon game at 1:30 on Oct. 12 in Utica. The team returns home for a game against West Genesee on Oct. 18 in the final week of the regular season.

The playoffs and crossover games are set for the following weekend of Oct. 25-26.

Last season, under new head coach Jake DerCola, RFA went 1-7 overall and 0-5 in the league.

Most high school football teams in Section III begin practice next Monday.
