RFA seeded third, will open sectionals on road vs. C-NS


The Rome Free Academy hockey team has earned a No. 3 seed in the Division I National playoff bracket for the Section III tournament.

The Black Knights will be on the road on Friday night as they travel to Twin Rinks to take on the No. 2 seed from Division I American League, Cicero-North Syracuse, at 6.

During the regular season, the Northstars defeated the Black Knights 3-1 on Dec. 18 at Twin Rinks.

West Genesee, 19-0, has earned the No. 1 seed for the American Conference in Division bracket while the No. 1 seed for the National Conference will be up for grabs tonight as Baldwinsville and Syracuse will battle it out. The winner will get the No. 1 seed for the National Conference and the loser will get the No. 2 seed.

In the Division II bracket, Skaneateles has earned the No. 1 seed in the American Conference and Cortland-Homer has earned the No. 1 seed for the National Conference. Clinton is the No. 3 seed coming out of the National conference and will play No. 2 seed Whitesboro, from the American Conference, on Thursday night at 7 in Whitesboro.

Hockey honors for Rome

RFA head coach Jason Nowicki was named the Section III Division I National Conference coach of the year and RFA junior defenseman Danny Mecca was chosen a Section III Division I first-team all-star during Sunday’s seeding meeting.

RFA senior goalie Ethan Siderine earned second-team honors, and sophomore forward Griffen Eychner and senior defenseman Michael Haag were among the honorable mentions.
