Congratulations to Rome Free Academy’s VEX Robotics “Black Knights” team that has qualified for the 2020 VEX Robotics World Championship event on April 22-25 in Louisville, Ky. The “Black Knights” team includes Antonio Cicci, Jon Denton, Mike Nason and Nick Smolinski. An RFA Vex Robotics team earned a trip to the event in 2016, and in 2015 as well.

The RFA team qualified as based on its performance at the 70-plus-team Northern New York State VEX High School Championships on Feb. 29 at the Oncenter in Syracuse, said RFA technology teacher Albert Bangs, who is VEX Robotics Club adviser.

In its 36-team division, the “Black Knights” team got to the finals with their alliance/partner from Corcoran High School in Syracuse, losing to the eventual tournament champions who are from Lake George school. Being finalists in their division qualified the RFA team for the world championship event in Louisville, said Bangs. RFA’s other VEX robotics team, the “Dusk Knights,” lost in the quarter finals, he noted.

The team would be glad of any financial help it can get from the community. Interested parties/businesses who would like to contribute funding toward the cost of the team attending the 2020 world championship event in Louisville can mail checks to Griffiss Institute, RFA VEX Robotics “Black Knights” Team, Attn: Lori Dellerba, 725 Daedalian Drive, Rome, NY 13441. For more information, contact Bangs at abangs@romecsd.org or the RFA VEX robotics club at rfavexrobotics@gmail.com by email.
