The Rome Free Academy baseball team suffered two one-run losses over the weekend in the Raider Classic in Utica, falling 7-6 on Sunday to Tri-Valley League rival Proctor High and 1-0 to McQuaid Jesuit on Saturday.
In Sunday’s game, Adam Williamson, Ryan Marello and Alex Sticca all doubled for the Black Knights. Sticca also drove in two runs for RFA in the loss.
Preston Mecca took the loss on the mound on Sunday for RFA. Mecca tossed four innings and gave up seven runs, four earned, on four hits while issuing eight walks and he struck out two.
On Saturday, Justin Swavely took the hard-luck loss for the Black Knights, tossing six innings, giving up one run on five hits while walking three and striking out three.
Offensively, RFA only managed two hits by Riley Brawdy and Owen Hetherington.
RFA is 5-10 on the season and is scheduled to visit Whitesboro on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. after hosting New Hartford this afternoon.
Oriskany sweeps twin bill
On Saturday, Oriskany played a pair of Center State Conference games as the Redskins defeated Morrisville-Eaton 10-2 and then defeated Poland 10-4.
In the first game against M-E, Brandon Reid earned his second win on the mound, working five innings, giving up two runs on four hits while walking three and striking out two.
At the plate, Ricky Phelps went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Matt Enos went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Kegan Krager picked up two hits and a RBI for the Redskins in the game one win.
In the second game, Aaron Drake picked up his third win of the season in a relief appearance, tossing 1 2/3 innings, just giving up one hit and striking out two batters.
Offensively, Phelps drove in three runs and Colton Davis doubled and had two RBIs. Carl Graziadei, Kegan Kraeger and Steven Armstrong each picked up an RBI for the Redskins in the win.
Oriskany moves to 12-1 overall and 9-1 in CSC play. The Redskins return to the field on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Dolgeville for a 4:30 p.m. CSC contest.
VVS wins non-leaguer
Zach Nell had two runs driven in, and both Davey Moffett and Alex Kipp each had a RBI as Vernon-Verona-Sherrill defeated Solvay, 4-2 ,in a non-league game at DeLutis Field on Saturday night.
Kipp also doubled for the Red Devils in the win.
TJ Horodnick picked up the win on the mound, tossing four innings, giving up a run on three hits while walking one and striking out two.
VVS moves to 15-1 on the season and next plays on Tuesday on the road against Camden at 4:30.
After falling 2-1 to Central Valley Academy in the first game of the Ron Wiernicki and Mike Malinowski Tournament hosted by Herkimer, Westmoreland bounced back to defeat the host Magicians, 11-0 in the consolation game.
Caleb Miller went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for the Bulldogs against Herkimer and Nik Hameister also picked up two hits and an RBI. Zach St. Peter had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Justin Matteson picked up his third win on the mound, throwing four innings, giving up two hits and striking out four.
In the first game, Hameister drove in the only Westmoreland run. Connor Mirasola suffered the loss on the mound in relief. Starter Dylan Breen worked 5 2/3 innings, giving up one run on six hits while walking four and striking out two.
Westmoreland had Miller and Breen make the all-tournament team.
Westmoreland, 4-7 overall, travels to Richfield Springs on Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
