RFA defender Gilroy, coach Smith earn TVL honors


Rome Free Academy senior defender Lily Gilroy was selected as the Tri-Valley League girls lacrosse player of the year. The Black Knights’ first year head coach Kayla Smith earned coach of the year honors in the league as well.

RFA, which won the league with an 8-0 record, was 12-4 overall this year. The team had six players earn first team league honors. Seniors Gilroy, goalkeeper Alana Iacovissi and attack Alexandra Tapia were chosen, as well as juniors midfields Danielle D’Aiuto and Drew Kopek and attack Alyssa Nardslico.

Clinton had five players selected to first team: senior midfielders Claire Barone and Brook Wollin, senior defense Avery Maxam and junior attacks Ava Alteri and Chelsea Lopata.

New Hartford also had four first team selections: senior attack Ilana McCarthy, junior attack Bella Kolb, junior midfield Sophia Campola and junior defense Leah Hilton.

Also on the first team were Vernon-Verona-Sherrill seniors Sierra Kinne (attack) and Alley Medina (defense), as well as Whitesboro juniors Gianna Parise (attack) and Maria Stuhlman (midfield).

RFA second team selections were junior defenders Chase Calandra and Brynn Furbeck and freshmen attackers Fiona and Isibeal McMahon.

Clinton had five second team selections: seniors Masha Lyubezhanin (attack) and Adelle Behara (defense) and juniors Taylor Maxam (atack), Olivia Spina (midfield) and Angela Borowiec (goalie).

New Hartford’s four second team selections were juniors Ella Greico (midfield) and Emily Picolla (goalie) and freshmen Mackinley Ronan (defense) and Kylie Thomas (defense).

Also on the second team were Whitesboro senior defender Tara Williams and VVS sophomore defender Maddie Ward.

The honorable mentions are RFA’s Shannen Calandra (junior attack), Alyssa D’Aiuto (sophomore defender), Isabella Sanzone (sophomore attack), Amelia Furbeck (eighth grade midfield); Clinton’s Dakota Deveans (sophomore midfield) and Abby Hemstrought (sophomore defense); New Hartford’s Sophia DeRollo (senior attack) and Grace McNamara (junior defense); VVS’ Emma Falkenmeyer (sophomore attack), Carmella Garcia (sophomore midfield) and Sofia Sherwood (freshman attack); and Whitesboro’s Rebecca Thomas (senior goalie), Rylie Fischer (senior defense), Brinley Ronan (sophomore attack) and Abigail Dicks (freshman midfield).
