Residential assistant charged with endangerment

LOWVILLE — A residential assistant has been charged with assault and endangerment in Lewis County following an attack on an elderly resident, according to law enforcement officials.

State police said Deborah A. Cannan, 63, of Lowville, worked as an IRA (individualized residential alternative) at a residential home on Dayan Street in Lowville. Troopers said on July 13, Cannan was in an argument with an elderly male resident when she shoved him, causing him to fall into a bookcase.

The victim suffered internal injuries and was treated at the county hospital.

Cannan was charged on Friday with one count each of third-degree assault and second-degree endangering the welfare of a physically disabled person, both misdemeanors, troopers stated. Cannan was released on an appearance ticket for Village Court for Aug. 25.
