The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Rome will celebrate “Paint the Town Purple” during the week of May 13.
Relay for Life of Rome will celebrate the survivors of all different types of cancers and remember those that cancer took from us. “Paint the Town Purple” is an opportunity for the community to raise awareness in the fight against cancer. The theme for this year’s relay is “Step Right Up and Relay,” which is based on carnival games.
The Relay for Life Committee is inviting all businesses, organization and schools to decorate their sites with purple ribbons, yard signs, banners and anything purple. The committee will judge the organizations and businesses on Wednesday, May 15.
There are several categories to qualify for and they are as follows: Best of Show, Most Purple People (first and second), Purplize Your Merchandize (first and second), and Most Creative Use of Purple (first and second), Best use of the theme, and a new category; Best Newcomer.
The Best of Show winner will have their names placed on the back of the relay T-shirts for the 2020 Relay for Life. The schools will be judged on Thursday, May 16. The schools will receive the spirit award. All winners will be notified the week of May 20.
The awards will be presented at the Relay for Life of Rome on Saturday, June 1 at 4:30 p.m. at the State School for the Deaf during the Fight Back Ceremony. Home owners are encouraged to decorate their homes during May.
To help bring about awareness of the fight against cancer, the sculpture at Griffass Business Park have taken on a purple glow. The General Cable water tower is also glowing purple. Spressos Coffee Cookies Cakes located at 160 Brooks Road will host an all-day “Hope on the Menu” by donating 10 percent of their profits on May 13 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aquino’s at 910 Floyd Ave. will host “Hope on the Menu” on Wednesday, May 15 from 4-9 p.m., and they will donate 10 percent of the profits. The Savoy located at 255 E. Dominick St. will also donate 10 percent of their profits on May 28 from 4-9 p.m.
The Eye Care Center of Rome will “Paint the Town Purple” on May 15. They will have purple drinks, cookies, cupcakes, some giveaways, balloons for children, and for every complete pair of glasses made, there will be a donation made to relay.
The color purple is used as the official color for Relay for Life. These “Paint the Town Purple” activities are designed to get the community excited about the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Rome.
Relay For Life is an opportunity for the community to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back. Relay for Life of Rome will take place on June 1 and 2 at the State School for the Deaf on Turin Street.
