UTICA — The Mohawk Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross will welcome members of the community and the Greater Utica Chamber of Commerce to a grand opening ceremony and donor appreciation event at the chapter’s new office at 125 Business Park Drive, Suite 200, at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20.
All are welcome to celebrate the chapter’s new space, the Red Cross said, as the agency recognizes the donors and community partners who make their lifesaving work possible.
Disaster volunteers are on-call 24/7, 365-days-a-year, the Red Cross said, so this new office is a safe, accessible space where they can access the tools and supplies they need to respond to disasters any time of the day or night.
The site can also host community classes like First Aid & CPR and it has a large space for volunteer training courses, the agency chapter said.
In addition to celebrating the new space, the donors who make the Red Cross successful- including the individual donors who made a major gift during the 2017 hurricane season, as well as the foundations, corporate partners and individual donors who help relieve human suffering in this community will be recognized.
The American Red Cross truly needs the support of the community to be able to carry out their lifesaving mission, the agency said, adding that 91 cents of every dollar they spend goes directly to helping those in need. Each year in this chapter, they respond to approximately 100 local disasters (the majority being home fires), install thousands of free smoke alarms, assist nearly 500 local military families, train nearly 1,500 people in disaster preparedness and assist in the collection of nearly 20,000 units of blood.
While the American Red Cross is funded solely by the generosity of the American people, 96 percent of their work is done by volunteers so they are always looking for local people who would like to give their time.
Information on donating, volunteering, taking a class, or giving blood can be found at www.redcross.org. Please note, their new office is not a blood donation site.
