Red Cross, communities seek to aid Marcy, Whitesboro fire victims

One person remains hospitalized and 15 total people were displaced in two separate fires in Marcy and Whitesboro Friday night. The causes of the fires remains under investigation.

• The first alarm was raised at 6:18 p.m. Friday for a house fire at 6793 Benton Road in Marcy, according to fire officials. Stittville Fire Chief William Sutherland said there was “smoke and fire showing out of the side” of the residence. Sutherland said volunteers accessed a nearby hydrant and had the flames knocked down in about 10 minutes.

One resident suffered “multiple burns” and had managed to escape the home on his own, the chief said. That man was air-lifted to University Hospital in Syracuse in critical condition, authorities said. His identity has not yet been released and his condition was not available this morning. A second resident also made it outside without injury, authorities said.

Chief Sutherland said the fire spread through the living room and kitchen, then up into the attic. He said the home is a total loss. The Stittville, Maynard and Barneveld fire departments responded.

• Within an hour, another alarm was raised at 6:52 p.m. for 24 Clinton St. in Whitesboro. Seven volunteer departments responded to the two-story residence, which housed four families in separate units, authorities said.

Authorities said five adults and eight children, ages 1 to 14, escaped the home without injury. Officials are crediting first responding police officers and firefighters with alerting residents and getting everyone outside, according to reports.

The American Red Cross is assisting the families. A fundraiser has also already raised more than $4,000 to be split among the displaced families.

The Whitesboro, Yorkville, New York Mills, Oriskany, Barneveld, Westmoreland and New Hartford fire departments responded, with Floyd, Holland Patent, Maynard and Stanwix Heights on standby.
