Raku Fire and Ice Bar pottery event coming to View in Old Forge
OLD FORGE — The public is invited to grab an ice-cold drink and watch the flame-filled spectacle of the Raku Fire and Ice Bar event from 3-6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at View, the center for arts and culture, 3273 State Route 28.
Raku pottery is a specialty firing where pots are removed from kilns when they are red hot and placed in buckets of flammable material. With the help of the ceramics team, guests will glaze a pot, watch it be fired, and take it home the same day. Horsehair, feathers and other organic materials will also be available to burn onto the surface of the pot to create interesting effects.
The process is done in less than an hour and is much more dramatic and fun to watch than a typical electric kiln that heats up and cools down over the course of days.
Pre-made pottery will be available to fire for $10 a piece. No registration is required.
View will have an Ice Bar in the courtyard where guests can enjoy some frosty drinks while watching the pot getting fired.
