Railway snow removal topic of meeting


NEW HARTFORD — The Utica and Mohawk Valley Chapter of the National Railway Society will hold its January meeting at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11 at Zion Lutheran Church at the corner of Burrstone and French roads.

There will be a business portion of the meeting conducted by President Harry Lenz on the Adirondack Scenic Railroad, the Toy Train Collectors’ Society Toy Train Meet at Utica Union Station, the Amherst Railway Society’s Model Train show in Springfield, Mass., the exhibit at the Children’s Museum, a possible day bus trip in late spring, a possible Amtrak trip, plus several other activities and events being planning in the upcoming months.

After the break, Wayne Freed will have a DVD on the snow removal operations on Donner Pass through Nevada all the way to California with rotary snowplows, Jordan Spreaders and Russell snowplows along that section of the Former Southern Pacific, now known as the Union Pacific.

Meetings are open to anyone interested in railroads, railroad history and railroad maintenance operations. Guests may attend. Active and retired railroad personnel are also encouraged to attend.
