ROME — The athletic track at the New York State School for the Deaf, 401 Turin St., — popular with exercise-minded community members for running and walking — is about to get a facelift.

NYSSD Interim Superintendent Kara Shore announced that the running/walking track area would be closed to the public and students starting Thursday. The track will remain closed through Friday, Sept. 23 and re-open Saturday, Sept. 24, weather-permitting.

Shore said AstroTurf is the name of the company performing the work.

NYSSD Maintenance Department Chairman Michael Anania explained that crews will first pressure wash the track to clean dirt off the surface and then apply a self-leveling epoxy that will fill cracks and voids, including water pockets.

“Then they’re going to resurface the track with paint that’s our school colors — the track will be green and the stripes will be yellow,” Anania said.

Workers will utilize a nearby fire hydrant for the pressure washer machine, and dirty water will be discarded into the nearby sewer system to eliminate runoff, he said.

“We are so excited to have our school colors featured on the track,” said Shore.

As for additional renovations, including the nearby bleachers, “More is yet to come,” she said. “The track is just the beginning.”
