BOONVILLE — Local police are warning about a scam in Boonville involving hacked official village email accounts.

Police said it appears that village government email accounts have been hacked by some unknown scammers. Police said several residents have received emails asking them to purchase multiple iTunes or other gift cards in the amount of $100 each.

The Village of Boonville does not solicit funds in this manner, officials said. If you receive such an email — or a phone call, text message or social media message — requesting you purchase gift cards, police said to not buy the cards or turn over any personal information.

Anyone who encounters such a scam should call their local law enforcement agency, officials said. The village is currently taking steps to secure their email accounts to prevent future fraud.
