Police say woman failed to return rented U-Haul truck

A Rome woman has been charged with felony grand larceny after law enforcement officials said she rented a U-Haul truck and never brought it back.

Police said Mary B. Mooney, 48, rented the truck from the Erie Boulevard depot earlier this year and was due to return it on March 1 — but she never did. Police said U-Haul gave Mooney until April 23 before they contacted law enforcement to investigate.

Authorities said state police found the U-Haul on Cemetery Road and it was emptied and towed. According to police, Mooney said she did not return the truck because she had yet to find a new place to live and she was using the truck as storage.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its closure of the courts in April, authorities said Mooney was not charged when the truck was found.

Authorities said a warrant was eventually filed for her arrest and she was taken into custody on Wednesday on a charge of felony third-degree grand larceny. Police said she is scheduled to appear in court.
