Police say Rome man choked girlfriend

A Rome man is accused of choking his girlfriend during a domestic dispute earlier this month, according to law enforcement officials.

Police said Jay Mather, 39, of William Street, threw an object at his girlfriend and hit her in the head at their apartment on July 5. Police said Mather approached the woman again later and pinned her up against a door using a chair, then choked her.

Police said the woman fought back and Mather left. The woman went to a friend’s residence and the friend called 9-1-1.

A warrant was issued for Mather and police said he was taken into custody on Wednesday. Mather is charged with one count each of criminal obstruction of breathing and second-degree harassment, police said. He is scheduled to appear in City Court.
