VERONA — A Rome man was charged with breaking into Lock 22 of the Erie Canal and stealing tools and an iPhone.
State Police at Sylvan Beach said on Oct. 15, troopers were called to investigate a burglary that had occurred at Lock 22. The complainant advised troopers that a yellow Volkswagen Beetle had been seen in the area where the burglary had occurred.
Members of the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Oneida were familiar with the vehicle from prior police encounters and checked area pawn shops for recent transactions made by the known occupants of the suspect vehicle, troopers said. The check of local pawn shops revealed that the known occupants sold stolen proceeds to an area pawnshop and had also sold the stolen iPhone in Syracuse.
On Oct. 18, a county-wide “be-on-the-lookout” was issued for the suspect vehicle. The car was located a short time later by troopers in the outer district of Rome. As a result, Dakota B. Mosley, 26, was taken into custody and charged with third-degree burglary, a class D felony. He was transported to Oneida County Jail for pre-arraignment detention.
