NEW HARTFORD — A Utica man is facing multiple charges after law enforcement officials said he shoplifted at Boscov’s at the Sangertown Square Mall and then tried to steal another person’s car to get away, the local law enforcers have reported.

Police said Matthew Linke, 34, shoplifted from Boscov’s at the mall on Friday and was caught by store security.

While police were en route, they said Linke escaped from security and fled the store on foot, running westbound on Commercial Drive.

Police said Linke found a vehicle that was left running at another business on Commercial Drive and he jumped in the driver’s seat. Police said the vehicle owner had gone into the store, and a 14-year-old child was sitting in the passenger seat.

The teen passenger jumped from the vehicle as Linke tried to pull out and drive away, authorities stated.

Linke was stopped before he left the parking lot and he was taken into custody.

Linke is charged with one count each of felony fourth-degree grand larceny, petty larceny and endangering the welfare of a child, police stated. He is scheduled to appear in court.

Authorities said Linke also had several open arrest warrants and he was turned over to the Utica Police Department.
