A 49-year-old man is accused of stealing a woman’s purse from her Goodrich Avenue residence in Utica while she was still home late Thursday night.
Police said Mark McDermott, of Utica, entered the woman’s home in the 1500 block of Goodrich Ave. shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday and snatched her purse.
The 88-year-old woman was at home and called 9-1-1.
An officer in the area attempted to stop and question a suspicious man on York Street, and police said the man was spotted carrying a purse. Authorities said the man first attempted to walk away from the officer, then was stopped and searched.
Police said the suspicious man was identified as McDermott, and he was found with both the purse and a crowbar.
McDermott is charged with one count each of second-degree burglary and fourth-degree grand larceny, both felonies, as well as one count of possession of burglar’s tools, a misdemeanor, police stated. He is scheduled to appear in City Court.
