A Rome woman registered a blood alcohol content of nearly three times the legal limit Monday after crashing into a utility pole on Smith Avenue, according to law enforcement officials.

Police said Bethany A. Heiland, 38, of West Dominick Street, was driving when her car crashed into a utility pole on Smith Avenue at about 12:10 a.m. Monday.

Police said Heiland fled the scene and her heavily damaged vehicle was found parked a few blocks away at the Rite Aid on Erie Boulevard.

Police said Heiland was sitting behind the wheel and she registered a BAC of 0.22% — nearly three times the legal threshold of 0.08%.

Heiland is charged with one count each of driving while intoxicated and aggravated DWI, police said.

She is scheduled to appear in City Court.
