Police probe fight after ceremony
ROME — A fight between several individuals shortly after the 2022 Rome Free Academy graduation ceremony Saturday morning is under investigation by the Rome Police Department.
The graduation ceremony started at 10 a.m. Saturday at the RFA Stadium on Turin Street, and was over within an hour. At 11:19 a.m., there was a call to 911 about a fight at the stadium.
Rome Police said several individuals inside the stadium started fighting and wrestling on the ground. Multiple people were still in the area, and authorities said the fight was quickly broken up by the other attendees and the Rome Police school resources officers.
Several people filmed the fight and posted videos on social media over the weekend.
Rome Police said the people involved in the fight were separated and taken out of the stadium. Their identities have not yet been released by police.
Shortly after the fight, at about 11:37 a.m., police said there were three gunshots in the 800 block of Croton St., about two blocks to the southwest of the stadium. One person was taken into custody for the gunfire. Police said they are still trying to determine if the gunfire is in any way connected to the fight at the stadium.
Police said the investigation into the stadium fight remains ongoing.
Attempts to contact Rome City School District officials Monday morning were not returned.
