VERONA — “The National Association of Music Merchants Foundation advances active participation in music-making across the lifespan by supporting scientific research, philanthropic giving and public service programs.”
That’s the mission of NAMMF, which has honored Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School, whose outstanding commitment to music education places VVS among the Best Communities for Music Education.
The group stresses the benefits of a music education. Everyday listening skills are stronger in musically trained children than in those without music training. Significantly, listening skills are closely tied to the ability to perceive speech in a noisy background, pay attention, and keep sounds in memory.
V-V-S, to qualify for the Best Communities designation, answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
In addition the NAMM Foundation supports grants and scholarship initiatives and funds music-making and music education-related research. Grants and Scholarships include Music Making, the NAMM President’s Innovation Award and the William R. Gard Scholarship.
Congratulations to the staff, students and educators who make VVS’ music program the success that it is.
