Physician assistant joins Rome Medical Practice Surgical Specialists

Board certified Physician Assistant Philip Downs, PA-C, has joined the staff at Rome Medical Practice Surgical Specialists, located in Suite 300, 267 Avery Lane. He will work with general surgeon Keneth Hall, MD, CM, in the practice.

“We are happy to welcome Phil to our surgical team,” said Rome Medical Practice Administrator Lisa Taurisano, MHA, BSN, RN. “He will lend his skill and knowledge in providing our patients with the quality surgical care they have come to expect from Rome Medical Practice Surgical Specialists.”

The practice provides complete care of a broad range of surgical procedures at Rome Memorial Hospital, including minimally invasive hernia repairs, cholecystectomies, anti-reflux procedures, and placement of gastric pacemakers to treat gastroparesis.

Downs earned a master of science degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Franklyn Pierce University, West Lebanon, NH. He has a membership in the National Association of Certification for Physician Assistants and holds a certification in emergency medicine from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Downs explained that his desire to help others inspired him to work toward becoming a physician assistant (PA).

“I originally intended to become a teacher,” he said. “Cuts to the budget in Sauquoit saw me go from teacher of the year to facing unemployment in a matter of months. I quickly decided after consulting with my family that medicine is an area which is rewarding to both the patient and the caregiver.”

Downs consulted his brother-in-law Timothy Mihm, also a PA, and has never looked back. “I have been working in emergency medicine as a PA for the past six years and it has been an amazing experience to be able to help people when they are in need of immediate care,” he explained.

Downs said that he is looking forward to the opportunity to spend more time with his patients. “With emergency medicine you may see a patient for about three hours and chances are, you’ll never see them again,” he said. “My new role with Dr. Hall affords me the ability to follow-up with patients, see how they are doing and help them achieve longer term goals.”

Downs says that his own experience in the healthcare system has helped him gain a new perspective which he applies to his career as a caregiver. “I recently had surgery and was the recipient of some amazing care and some not-so-amazing care,” he said.

“Seeing the impact of that care on both myself and my family has inspired me to become a better caregiver. I make sure that the patient and their family are well informed of their options and what every step of the process will entail as they move forward.”
