ROME — A pedestrian is in stable condition after being struck by an accused drunken driver on North Madison Street shortly after midnight on Thursday, according to the Rome Police Department.

Police said the pedestrian was crossing at the intersection of North Madison and West Thomas streets when he was struck by a southbound 2016 Nissan Altima, driven by Candice L. Childs, 32, of Rome. Police said Childs fled the scene, and witnesses were able to flag down nearby police and rescue personnel at about 12:49 a.m.

The victim was treated at the scene and then rushed to a local hospital, where authorities said he is in stable condition.

One patrol car had been in the area just prior to the crash, and police said they checked their license plate-reader to see if they could identify the Nissan Altima. They said they were able to get a positive identification and soon located Childs.

Childs is charged with one count each of driving while intoxicated, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, circumvention of an interlock device and leaving the scene of an accident, police said. Additional charges are possible.

Childs was arraigned in Rome City Court and was released on her own recognizance.

Police are asking residents in the area of North Madison and West Thomas streets to check their surveillance cameras for possible footage from the crash. Anyone with footage or information about the incident is asked to call Rome Police at 315-339-7744. Anonymous tips can be sent to the website www.MohawkValleyCrimeStoppers.com or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-866-730-8477.
