Paul J.R. Welsh, 85, of Rome, passed away on Friday, May 10, 2019 peacefully at home. Born in the Bronx, NY, on February 22, 1934, he was the son of the late Edward and Margaret (Richter) Welsh. On February 5, 1975 he was united in marriage to Myong Kim.
Paul served his country in the US Air Force from 1953-1977. After being honorably discharged he went on to work in a civil service capacity at Griffiss Air Force Base for many years.
He was a member of St. Mary’s/St. Peter’s Church, HP Smith Post #24, VFW Post #2246, Stanwix Veteran’s and Men’s Club, Disabled American Veterans, Air Force Sergeants Association, Vietnam Veterans of America, and the Sampson Air Force Base Veterans Association. He worked very diligently for over 20 years to have a Vietnam Veterans Memorial built at Griffiss.
Paul is survived by his loving wife, Myong and their two children, Michele (John) Welsh-McCormick of Rome and Geoffrey (Lori) Welsh of Rome and their daughter Calista; four children from a previous marriage, Paula (Colette) Welsh of El Paso, TX, Elaine (Brad) Carlson of Meridian, ID, Colleen (Richard) Fuller of Colorado Springs, CO, and David (Lois) Welsh of Baraboo, WI; two brothers, Gary (Mona) Welsh and Edward Welsh of Prescott, AZ; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Mae Schiavone; a brother, Arthur Welsh; and a grandson, Riley.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 18, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church. Interment with Military Honors will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Family and friends may call at St. Mary’s Church prior to mass on Saturday from 10-11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Paul’s memory may be made to the Vietnam Veterans of America, 8719 Colesville Rd., Suite 100, Silver Springs, MD 20910.
