Pat Benatar tribute act hits Oneida with their Best Shot

ONEIDA  — The music of Pat Benatar, just as audiences remember it, will be relived as the Long Island-based tribute band Best Shot performs at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Kallet Civic Center, 159 Main St.

“It’s going to be a real good tribute in an explosive show,” promised Best Shot lead singer Melissa Lotardo, who is joined onstage by Jerry G on lead guitar, Tom Daniels on keyboards, Rob Curry on bass and Rob Cardone on drums.

Lotardo said she was singing with another act on Long Island when they found their Pat Benatar covers went over well with their audiences. Best Shot was born in November 2019 as an authentic reproduction of a real Benatar concert during her heyday, circa 1983, Lotardo said.

They play all of Benatar’s big hits, including “Heartbreaker,” “We Live for Love,” “Love is a Battlefield,” “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” “Fire and Ice” and “Promises in the Dark.” Best Shot also throws in some non-Benatar 80s female rock ‘n’ roll classics from the likes of Scandal, Joan Jett and Lita Ford as a bonus.

Benatar and her husband/guitarist Neil Geraldo’s own Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2022 have also boosted Best Shot’s popularity, Lotardo said. And the video for Benatar’s hit “You Better Run” was actually the second that was shown on the brand-new MTV Music Television station when it debuted on Aug. 1, 1981.

It’s nearly Valentine’s Day, and Lotardo said she continues to be inspired by the love story of Benatar and Geraldo. The real-life rock ‘n’ roll couple celebrates their 41st wedding anniversary on Feb. 20.

“I just love that they are still married and have always been rockers with a drug-free message,” Lotardo said. “They are really just like regular people - very grounded.”

The Kallet’s Heartbreaker Ball that evening features dancing, free appetizers and a cash bar for drinks. Tickets range from $30 to $45 and can be purchased at www.oneidakallet.com. Admission is limited to 400 people. Doors will open at 7 p.m.

Lotardo said she looks forward to bringing the music of Benatar, and some of their own keepsake Best Shot merchandise as well, to the Kallet audience.

“I really like her style of singing,” Lotardo complimented. “She is one of the women trailblazers in rock and it is fun to emulate her.”
