Pair of Oneonta residents accused of trying to scam businesses

Two Oneonta residents are accused of trying to scam several businesses in Utica.

Police said Michelle Schaffner, 46, and Joshua Eckman, 36, would contact businesses and claim they bought a product, only to be shipped the wrong product, and then would demand a refund. Police said the pair never ordered any products to begin with and it was all made up.

Police said they were notified of the pair on Saturday and they were taken into custody later that day.

Schaffner and Eckman are both charged with one count each of attempted petty larceny and sixth-degree conspiracy, both misdemeanors, authorities stated. They are scheduled to appear in City Court.
