Pair of businesses accused of selling untaxed smokes


Employees at Benny’s Market on South James Street and Zack Mini Mart on Lawrence Street in Rome have been charged with selling untaxed cigarettes, according to law enforcement officials.

Police said two search warrants were executed on the two markets at about 10 a.m. Monday. Police said they seized over 200 cartons of untaxed cigarettes, $12,000 in cash and other drug paraphernalia.

Benny’s Market is located at 218 S. James St. Zack Mini Mart is located at 301 Lawrence St.

Police said one employee was taken into custody at each store, and each one was charged with one count of selling untaxed cigarettes, a class E felony, through the state tax and finance laws.

Both men also live upstairs of their respective stores, the police added.

Charged are:

• Yazan M. Ahmen, 23, of 218 S. James St., upstairs.

• Fares M. Alaodyi, 28, of 301 Lawrence St., upstairs.

Police said both men were released on appearance tickets for City Court.
