TOWN OF CANAJOHARIE — A Utica couple was charged with felony drug possession following a traffic stop in Montgomery County late Sunday night, according to law enforcement officials.
Sheriff’s deputies said Akeem Bigelow, 30, of 903 Nichols St., Utica, and Amanda M. Zayas, 32, of 12 Newell St., Utica, were pulled over for speeding on Highway 5S at about 10:23 p.m. Sunday. Montgomery County is located at the southeast corner of Herkimer County.
Deputies said the vehicle smelled of marijuana and a small quantity was turned over. Deputies said a K-9 searched the vehicle and found 107 THC concentration vape cartridges and 11 grams of marijuana. Deputies said there were also two children in the back seat, at least one of whom was not properly restrained.
Both Bigelow and Zayas are charged with one count each of felony third and misdemeanor seventh-degree possession of a controlled substance, as well as two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, authorities said. Bigelow is additionally charged with one count each of second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, speeding, and for the child without restraint, deputies stated.
Bigelow was arraigned in court and was sent to the county jail without bail. Zayas, who authorities said is currently on probation for a previous grand larceny charge, was arraigned and released. They are both scheduled to return to court on July 2.
