Oscar-nominated movies to be featured at Cinema Capitol
ROME — The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards were announced Jan. 24, and the Cinema Capitol, 230 W. Dominick St., has a full schedule of Oscar-nominated movies all month.
Starting Friday, Feb. 3, the cinema will welcome “The Whale,” featuring Academy Award nominated performances from Brendan Fraser and Hong Chau. “The Whale” tells the story of a reclusive English teacher suffering from severe obesity who attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter, and will run for the next two weeks.
“The Whale” will be shown Friday, Feb. 3 and Saturday, Feb. 4 at 3:45 and 7 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 5 at 12:45 and 4 p.m.; and Monday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m.. It will also show Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11 at 3:45 and 7 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 12 at 12:45 and 4 p.m., and Monday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.
Nominated for three Oscars, “The Whale,” a 2022 American psychological drama film directed by Darren Aronofsky and written by Samuel D. Hunter, is based on his 2012 play of the same name. The movie stars Brendan Fraser — nominated for Best Actor Oscar.
Running time is 117 minutes.

The Cinema Capitol isn’t the only part of the Capitol Arts Complex that will be screening Academy Award nominated films. On Friday, Feb. 10, and Saturday, Feb. 11, the historic Capitol Theatre will continue its Great American Novel film series with the Academy Award winning “In the Heat of the Night,” the story of African American police detective Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier) investigating a murder in the Deep South with a local white police chief (Rod Steiger).
“In the Heat of the Night” would go on to win five Academy Awards including Best Picture of 1967, and will screen at the Capitol at 7 p.m. on Friday and 2:30 and 7 p.m. on Saturday. The screening is made possible by a grant from the Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, the Ann M. Wright Memorial Fund, and the Beatrice and Ruth Begent Fund.
Finally, Cinema Capitol will showcase the much-anticipated Steven Spielberg film “The Fabelmans,” which will screen beginning Friday, Feb. 10. “The Fabelmans” is an original film from the Academy Award winning director drawn from his own childhood memories.
Growing up in the post-World War II era Arizona from age 7-18, a young man named Sammy Fabelman discovers a shattering family secret and explores how the power of film can help him see the truth. The Fabelmans is nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Several more Oscar nominated films are on the way, including the annual screenings of the Oscar-nominated short films.
