Oriskany seniors bid farewell to high school
ORISKANY
It was a memorable day for Oriskany Central School seniors as they transitioned from
students to alumni during their graduation ceremony on Friday, June 24, in front of the high school.
“The Class of 2022 endured challenges seldom seen before,” stated Junior/Senior High School Principal Mark Ranieri. “Together, you emerged from a global health crisis over the past two years in order to carry on the legacy of so many generations of faithful Oriskany graduates.”
As this year’s nearly 50 graduates march forward into adulthood, Ranieri advised them to cherish each moment, treat people with kindness, and extend forgiveness to themselves and to others.
“I wish you all the best that life has to offer,” he shared.
This year’s class had two co-salutatorians, Eric Noga and Kaley Hamm. Noga shared remarks with the crowd.
Drawing insight from the movie franchise, “Cars,” Noga stated, “As high school graduates, we are but young racers ready to lose our training wheels, stuck somewhere between reliving our favorite memories and excited for the open road ahead.” He continued, “We are in the driver’s seat now, each of us holding the key to our own future.”
Despite being the top of the class, Valedictorian Anna Zumbrun recognized the strengths of her peers. “I know for certain that I am not the smartest,” Zumbrun said humbly. Instead of using her wit alone, it was her hard work that got her to where she is, she reflected, and she encouraged others to put in the work to become the person they want to be. “Now is the perfect time to change” if necessary, she told her class.
On behalf of the entire class, class officers took a moment to thank Ranieri for his dedication and support, “from being there everyday in the hallway saying good morning to allowing us to pull some crazy stunts for our senior prank,” a class officer shared, bidding him farewell as he moves on from his current position. Class Supervisors Garrett LoCash and Mattew Vedete were also recognized for their efforts and being good role models.
“I’m excited for each of you. I am proud of all of you,” remarked Superintendent Timothy Gaffney, wishing the Oriskany Class of 2022 all the best.
The ceremony was concluded with confetti poppers, caps thrown in the air, and photos with friends and loved ones.
