It’s a safe bet to say that having five of the safest communities out of top 100 in the state isn’t too bad.
That is the number of Oneida suburb communities between Rome and Utica which are among the 100 safest in New York State, according to the website niche.com, which ranked communities across the state and nation on a variety of public safety factors.
Whether it’s Oriskany, the top local finisher on the list at No. 8 and the smallest of the local communities to make the list at 1,329 residents, or the town of Whitestown (No. 18), the largest with 18,669 residents and an area of 27-square miles, these towns are among the safest places to live and still be within shouting distance of a metropolitan area in the state, according to the website’s researchers.
The other communities in the region to make the list are the town of Kirkland (No. 34); Whitesboro (No. 59) and New York Mills (No. 61).
Those rankings show that residents in those communities have a low risk of suffering from any criminal misdeeds, niche.com reports.
“I think these findings are a tribute to our police department, and our citizens,” Oriskany Mayor Donald F. Rothdiener said. “Our police do a good job, and our residents are quick to help each other out by reporting anything suspicious.”
Statistics shared on the website state that the chance of being a victim of a violent crime in the village is nearly zero. Burglary rates were 144.4 out of 100,000 — so residents had just over a 1 in 1000 percent chance of having their homes robbed; larceny rates were 577 out of 100,000 and there was also a nearly zero percent chance of car theft.
Nearby, Whitestown was nearly just as safe. Residents of the town also had a low percent chance of being a victim of violence crime. Burglary rates were 142.2 out of 100,000 while larcenies were 667.3 out of 100,000. Motor vehicle theft rates were 328 out of 100,000.
“I think our police do a god job of patrolling the village,” Rothdiener said. “If someone is speeding and they see a police car they will slow down, or if they are up to no good, the sight of a police car will deter them from doing wrong.”
Niche.com is a website founded by students at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in 2002. In addition to its nationwide rankings of communities, the site also ranks schools districts for students in grades kindergarten through 12, colleges and other organizations and locations.
Although Oneida County can boast of a strong showing in the rankings, Westchester County hosted three of the top five suburbs in the report, including the top community, Pleasantville, which was No. 1. Joining Pleasantville were Irvington (No. 3) and Briarcliff Manor (No. 5).
Port Dickinson in Broome County was No. 2 on the list, while Lloyd Harbor in Suffolk County was ranked No. 4. Brewster in Putnam County was No. 6 and Marcellus in Onondaga County was No. 7. Dexter in Jefferson County was No. 9 and Piermont in Rockland County rounded out the list at No. 10.
