JUNCTION CITY, KAN. — John Pierson was recently promoted to 1st Lieutenant in the Army. He is with the 511 Quartermaster Company at Fort Riley in Junction City, Kansas, which is the home of the 1st Infantry Division - “The Big Red One.”
The 511th Quartermaster Company provides vital support for the modern warfighter at home and abroad, according to the Army. The 1st Infantry Division was organized on June 8, 1917, for duty on the Western Front in World War I. The first permanent division in the regular Army, it has seen action in all American wars since 1917, except the Korean, and has performed extensively in such recent areas as Iraq and Afghanistan. It is often the first unit of the Army to deploy and engage the enem.
Nicknamed “Big Red One” for the red numeral that has adorned its shoulder patch since 1918, the 1st Infantry Division is a combined arms division.
Pierson graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant from SUNY Geneseo ROTC in 2019. He is the son of Dan Pierson, Cider Street, Oriskany, and Eileen Pierson, Cider Street, Oriskany. He is a June 2015 graduate of Oriskany Central High School.
