A scam prevention and online safety seminar for seniors will be held at the North Utica Senior Citizen Community Center on Monday, Oct. 28.

The free seminar will be hosted by State Sen. Joseph A. Griffo, R-47, Rome, Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr., AT&T and the Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York. The North Utica Senior Citizen Community Center is located at 50 Riverside Drive in Utica.

The seminar will take place from noon to 2 p.m. on Oct. 28, according to the announcement by the event organizers.

“All too often, we see scammers target and take advantage of senior citizens in our communities,” said Griffo in a release.

“We are providing seniors with useful tips and tools that will help them to recognize and protect against scams and stay safe when online,” the state senator added.

At the seminar, BBB and AT&T representatives will speak about recognizing and avoiding scams that prey specifically on seniors, and they will offer cybersecurity tips to help seniors and others protect their identities online and navigate the internet safely, organizers said, adding that tips will be given on how to avoid both prominent and lesser-known scams and what to do if a senior falls victim to a scam.

“It is a sad state of affairs that there are those who viciously seek to take advantage of our senior population at every turn,” said Picente in a release.
