Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES earns 19 awards in NSPRA contest

NEW HARTFORD —The Oneida-Herkimer-Madison (OHM) BOCES School Communication Service was recognized with 19 awards in the National School Public Relations Association’s (NSPRA) 2021 Publications and Digital Media Awards, a national contest to recognize and celebrate outstanding achievement in educational communications. Five of the honors were an Award of Excellence, the highest level of recognition; two of the honors were an Award of Merit, the second-place level of recognition; and 11 were Honorable Mention, the third-place level of recognition.

Earning Awards of Excellence in the Excellence in Writing category were the articles “Oneida/Herkimer School Library System Brings Adventures to Students,” written by Public Relations Specialist Rebecca Neary and “Frankfort-Schuyler Provides Students Meals with the Help of OHM BOCES, Melrose Supermarket,” written by Public Relations Assistant Maria Hughes. Earning an Award of Excellence in the Marketing Publication category was the 2021-2022 Career and Technical Education Program Guide, designed by Senior Graphic Artist Cheri Derdzinski; and earning an Award of Excellence in the Marketing Materials category was the P-TECH OHM Recruitment Video (postcard), produced by Graphic Services Supervisor Andrea Rafferty, Graphic Artist Adam Brockway and Neary.

Additionally, the 2020-2021 Utica City School District Calendar, designed by former Graphic Artist Carly Wright earned an Award of Excellence in the Calendar category.

Earning Awards of Merit were the COVID-19 Safety Posters, designed by Rafferty, in the Special Purpose Publication category; and the Clinton Central School District Facebook Page, managed by Public Relations Assistant Alyssa Sacco, in the Social Media category.

Earning Honorable Mentions were several department-wide projects including the 2021 OHM BOCES Annual Meeting Book in the Annual Report category; the OHM BOCES website in the Internet/Intranet Website category; and the OHM BOCES Facebook Page in the Social Media category.

Also earning Honorable Mentions were the article “OHM BOCES Adopts New Mission, Vision and Motto,” written by Neary, in the Excellence in Writing category; the 2021-2022 OHM BOCES Service Directory, designed by Graphic Artist Kerry Zegarelli, in the Special Purpose Publication category; the OHM BOCES “Thank You” Series and “Alumni Spotlight” Series, both designed by Rafferty, in the Social Media category; and the Career and Technical Education Highlight Video and Division Integration Introduction Video, both produced by Brockway, in the Video (produced in-house) category.

Additionally, three components districts’ newsletters received Honorable Mentions in the Print Newsletter (External Audience) category.

They were the Oriskany Central School District’s Nov. 2020 and Feb. 2021 Newsletters produced by Hughes and Zegarelli; the Remsen Central School District’s Nov. 2020 and Feb. 2021 Newsletters produced by Hughes and Wright; and the Whitesboro Central School District’s May 2020 and Feb. 2021 Newsletters produced by Public Relations Assistant Rebecca Walts and Derdzinski.

The School Communications team is overseen by Jean Palmer, supervisor of communications and printing services and includes recently hired Graphic Artist Manuel Beltrán and Public Relations Assistant Jerry Pritchard.

All public and private schools and education organizations, as well as private businesses serving as business partners, were eligible to enter the competition.

Awards were given according to the type of communication vehicle and the type and size of the district/organization. Each entry was judged on the overall excellence of the entry as well as its quality compared to other entries in the category.

NSPRA is a professional organization dedicated to building support and trust for education through responsible public relations that leads to success for all students.
