Oneida County 4-H launches new Cloverbud Club

Posted

ORISKANY — National 4-H Week is celebrated Sunday, Oct. 2, through Saturday, Oct. 8. This year’s theme is Opportunity4All and highlights that talented children are everywhere, and opportunities to foster their talent are not always available.

In celebration of creating opportunities for the youth, the Oneida County 4-H will start a new Cloverbud Club in November.

The Cloverbud Club will be for youth ages 5 to 7, allowing them to learn the basics of 4-H and involve youth in non-competitive group activities, rather than individual projects like the older 4-H members participate in.

Ellen Olson, an early care and learning subject educator at Cornell Cooperative Extension Oneida County, will lead the new Cloverbud Club. Her goals are to include activities that involve STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math), working on each topic throughout the year. She also plans to work on social-emotional skill-building activities at each meeting briefly.

The first November meeting will work on building catapults and experimenting with different projectiles: pom poms, small erasers, and rubber balls.

Measurements of how far the projectiles flew will be taken and charted.
