ORISKANY — The Oneida Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is preparing in a big way for an America 250 Patriot Marker Dedication Ceremony to take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 17, at the Oriskany Battlefield, 7801 Route 69.

The Patriot Marker to be dedicated will have the America250 symbol on it, chapter officials said, adding the marker and dedication ceremony is the Oneida Chapter’s way of remembering those who fought for America freedom 250 years ago.

The marker at the Oriskany Battlefield will be only the second marker to be placed in New York State in honor of the nation’s 250th birthday and the first one placed by a local DAR Chapter, according to the announcement by the Oneida Chapter. The marker will also be the 40th one placed in the nation.

“The other unique aspect of our marker placement is our partnership with the Oneida Indian Nation who helped in the purchase of this marker,” the chapter announcement said.

“The Oneida’s partnered with the colonists at the Battle of Oriskany and continue to partner with Oneida Chapter in this historic marker placement.  We appreciate and value our partnership with the Oneida Indian Nation.”

In attendance at the Marker Dedication will be:

National Daughters of the American Revolution’s President General Denise Doring Van Buren;

Honorary President General and National America250! Chair Lynn Forney Young;

New York State DAR Regent
Patrice Powley Birner;

Ray Halbritter, Oneida Indian Nation Representative;

Anthony J. Picente, Jr., Oneida County Executive; and

Representatives from the offices of our United States House of Representative, the Honorable, Claudia Tenney, and our New York State Assemblywomen, Marianne Buttenschon.

Immediately following the dedication, visitors will be able to explore the State Historic Battlefield and Monument.

At noon, there will be a lunch provided by O’Connor’s (cost is $35) and speaker is Michael G. Roets, Historic Site Regional Supervisor for New York State Parks, will discuss the importance of the Battle of Oriskany and its role in the Revolutionary War. Pre-registration for the lunch was required.
