Oneida Area Council Churches plan events for Make a Difference Day
ONEIDA — The Make a Difference Day Committee and the Oneida Area Council of Churches are reminding people they can have an impact on society and the world, even by doing small actions.
The Oneida Area Council of Churches is inviting the community to two different events on Make a Difference Day on Saturday, Oct. 22.
People are invited to an open prayer vigil from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 341 Main St. and a self-guided prayer walk at the New Hope Christian Community Church on Route 46 in Oneida from noon to 3 p.m.
“Whether it’s standing up to injustices in your local community, working with classmates on a school project, or taking part in a random act of kindness, there’s always something that can be done to improve the community we live in,” the Oneida Area Council of Churches officials wrote.
Those interested can call 315-280-0869 and leave a message, the announcement said.
At both locations, a free offering, whether monetary or non-perishable food, will be accepted to benefit local food pantries and soup kitchens, event organizers said.
Make a Difference Day was created by “USA Weekend” magazine in 1992 as an effort to promote community support and encourage volunteerism across the United States. The event was co-sponsored by the Points of Light, a non-profit organization founded by former President George H. W. Bush.
