One person suffers minor injury in home explosion on First Lake
OLD FORGE — One person suffered a minor injury due to a reported home explosion on First Lake in Herkimer County Friday afternoon.
Old Forge Fire Chief Chris Stanley said a lakeside residence on Hollywood Road exploded shortly after 2:30 p.m. Friday. Debris was strewn around the area and into the lake, with black smoke visible for miles around.
Stanley said no one was home when the residence exploded. The chief said a person near the residence suffered a “minor injury.” Along with the destroyed home, other nearby buildings were damaged.
“After the explosion, there was a fire,” Stanley noted. Responding firefighters knocked down the flames.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Chief Stanley said the state Office of Fire Prevention and Control has been called in to investigate.
The Old Forge, Otter Lake and Eagle Bay fire departments responded.
