COLD BROOK — Downed power lines and excessive heat were hazards during a house fire on Main Street in Cold Brook in Herkimer County Saturday evening, according to the Poland Fire Department.

Fire officials said the alarm was raised at about 6:55 p.m. Saturday for a house fire at the corner of Main Street and Rosevalley Road. Authorities said a lightning storm had just passed through the area and had knocked down several power lines across Route 8.

Responding firefighters were unable to initially reach the house fire because of the downed lines, officials said, with both sides of the residence blocked on Route 8. When crews made it to the scene, they said it was an exterior attack only.

An excavator was called to the scene to knock down some of the structure, giving firefighters better access to the fire, officials said. The blaze was under control within 30 minutes, authorities said.

Temperatures pushed into the high 80s and low 90s on Saturday, with excessive humidity.

No one is believed to have been injured. The American Red Cross is assisting the one homeowner who was displaced.

The Poland, Newport, Barneveld, Deerfield, Salisbury, Remsen, Schuyler and Middleville fire departments responded.
