Officials investigate cause of fire in Utica

The West Side Smoke Shop went up in smoke on Utica’s west side Friday afternoon. One firefighter was injured.

Utica fire officials said the cause of the fire at the store remains under investigation at 1232 Court St.

Officials said the alarm was raised at about 5:30 p.m. after flames were spotted on the outside of the building.

Fire crews responded and the flames were under control in about half an hour.

Authorities said a nearby building was evacuated and was checked to make sure the fire hadn’t spread.

Fire officials said the fire started on the outside of the West Side Smoke Shop, and the flames spread inside and damaged some of the merchandise. Officials said one firefighter suffered a hand injury on scene.
