VERNON — The annual installation of officers for the American Legion William Russell Post 404 for the Legion and Sons of the American Legion took place recently at the post. The event was officiated by Duane Clark, past county commander, who served in the Army for 22 years; and Walt Constantini, past county commander, who served in the Air Force for 20 years.

American Legion officers

Irving Barney was sworn in as commander of Post 404. Barney served in the Marines for 16 years; his last position was staff sergeant.

Other officers installed are:

  • First vice commander — Cheryl Sreca, Army, six years;
  • Second vice commander — Michael Sryles, Navy/Army, 32 years;
  • Third vice commander — George Yoxall, Army, two years;
  • Treasurer/compliance officer — Lawrence Dauksza, Marines, two years;
  • Chaplain/homeland security — Marvin Stein, Air Force, four years;
  • Historian/membership — Charles Young, Navy, 23 years;
  • Adjutant — Rene Sryles, Navy/Army, 22 years;
  • Service officer — Richard Trost, Marines, two years; and
  • Sergeant-at-arms/judge advocate — Art Strife, Marines, two years.

Sons of the American Legion Officers

Michael Thurston was sworn in as commander of the Sons of the American Legion.

Other officers installed are:

  • First vice commander — Thomas Miner;
  • Second vice commander — James McArory;
  • Third vice commander — Richard Maciag;
  • Treasurer — Corey Young;
  • Chaplain — Slade Yoxall;
  • Sergeant-at-arms — Daniel Houseman;
  • Historian — Don Prentice;
  • Adjutant — Douglas Kitchen; and
  • Adviser — George Yoxall.

About William Russell Post 404

The William Russell Post 404 in Vernon was founded in 1920 in the name of World War I veteran William Russell, an area native. Members include veterans of America’s armed forces, sons of veterans and auxiliary members. All units support numerous veterans’ and civic programs in Central New York.
