A team from Oakville, Ontario, Canada that was skipped by Matt Hames of the Utica Curling Club won the 137th Mitchell Bonspiel 7-2.

Oakville wins 137th Mitchell Bonspiel

WHITESTOWN — A team from Oakville, Ontario, Canada that was skipped by Matt Hames of the Utica Curling Club won the 137th Mitchell Bonspiel 7-2 over a rink from the Navan Curling Club.

Oakville maintained control of the A event finals early in the match and Navan conceded the contest after eight ends. Stu Card from the Utica Curling Club was also a member of the the winning rink. Oakville Curling Club is an eight-sheet club located on Lake Ontario, southwest of Toronto.

Thirty-six teams from Canada and the U.S. including one from as far away as Texas vied for the gold Mitchell Medal, which is one of he oldest medals awarded in curling in North America. It was donated to the Grand National Curling Club by industrialist Alexander Mitchell in 1885 and has been hosted by the Utica Curling Club since 1910.

The winning team in the A event was made up of Hames and Card as well as Scott and Steve Bailey.

The B winner (Allen Medal) was Broomstones from Boston, Massachusetts.

The C winner (Country Club Trophy) was Manotick 1 from Ontario.

The D winner (Evans Medal) was a team from North Grenville, Ontario.

The E winner (Friendship Trophy) was Plainfield 2 from New Jersey.

F event winner (Saranac Award) Granite 1 was from Nashua, New Hampshire.

This weekend the club will host the 68th Women’s Empire State Bonspiel with 16 teams from the Northeastern U.S. and Canada. 

The first draw starts at 9 a.m. on Friday with play continuing on Saturday and finals scheduled noon on Sunday. For more information regarding local curling visit www.uticacurlingclub.org.
