No. 1 Utica University rolls to UCHC final; Utica women also advance
The No. 1 Utica University men's hockey team continues to roll.
The Pioneers scored six times in the first period and had little trouble in an 11-0 win over Manhattanville College on Saturday night in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference semifinals at the Adirondack Bank Center.
High-scoring Utica finished with 71 shots while allowed 18 shots. Of Utica's 11 goals, one was shorthanded while five came on power plays in eight chances.
Lucas Hermann tied a program-record with three other players in scoring four goals in the game.
He was among a few players to finish with a multi-point effort in support of goalies Bryan Landsberge (12 saves) and Avery Sturtz (six saves).
Jason Dubay (three assists) and Regen Cavanagh (goal, two assists) were also among the leaders for Utica.
The result extends the program's record undefeated streak to 25 straight games and its winning streak to 17 games.
The top-seeded Pioneers are 24-2-1 overall. The team is set to make their fifth appearance in the UCHC championship in the last six seasons.
Utica is set to host second-seeded Nazareth College at 7 p.m. on Saturday to decide the winner of the UCHC tournament.
Utica women's team moves on
The No. 12-ranked Utica University women's team is playing for the UCHC championship for the first time.
Utica scored four times in the first period and earned a a 7-1 semifinal win over Manhattanville College on Saturday at the Nexus Center.
The result pushes Utica to 22-2-3 overall this season.
Erica Sloan (goal, three assists), Carly Stefanini and two goals while Maggie Rylott had three assists. Abby Lillis, Cortney Staniszewski and Carolyn Whitney also scored for Utica.
In goal, Angela Hawthorne made 32 saves for her 16th victory of the season.
Utica will travel to Rochester on Saturday to play No. 13 Nazareth College for the UCHC title.
