Nighttime drone racing is returning to SUNY-Polytechnic’s campus, complete with a chance for the public to try first-person-view goggles and flight simulators. The SUNY Polytechnic Institute University Model Aviation Student Club in cooperation with CNY Drones will host NEON Night Race II, Sept.15, at Wildcat Field on the SUNY Utica campus. The event opens at 7 p.m. with races starting at dusk.
Drones will fly on a neon-lit course and darkened field. Spectators can take in the racing and mingle with drone enthusiasts.
CNY Drones is the Utica-Rome area’s chapter of the MultiGP Racing organization and provides racing to complement its core program, an annual indoor team drone challenge for students age 11 and older.
SUNY Polytechnic’s Model Aviation Club partners with CNY Drones on races and educational events. The club plans Drone Info Day on Sept. 30, and the Team Drone Challenge Competition Day April 7, 2019. The partnership is intended, both clubs say, gives volunteers and college students to provide community programs that feed the regional drone education and employment pipeline. The groups held night races at the campus in April.
