New York Mills’ Edick wins Moore run/walk at MVCC
UTICA — Christopher Edick of New York Mills won the 2023 Theodore “Ted” Moore Run/Walk at Mohawk Valley Community College Thursday.
Edick, age 38, won the 5K in 18:38. The race, now in its 26th year on the Utica campus, is presented by the Oneida County STOP-DWI Program.
The rest of the top five finishers wre Eric Kasper of Clark Mills, Jay’lin Roman of Utica, Paul Humphrey of Deerfield and Tom Rahmer of Rome.
The top finisher among women was Amanda Mazza of New Hartford, who ran the race in 23:05. She was ninth overall.
Finishing sixth through 10th were Dayton Elseth of Utica; Luke Carpenter of Peru, New York; Mathew Vasquez of Deansboro; Mazza; and Tyler O’Dell of Blossvale.
There were 45 participants.
The event raises awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving. Moore was an associate professor in MVCC’s mathematics department from 1981 until December 1996, when he was struck and killed by a drunk driver while out for a morning run. The college honors his memory each year with the run/walk, and the theme “None for the Road” reflects MVCC’s opposition to driving while under the influence of alcohol. Event proceeds benefit a scholarship in Moore’s name, which is awarded annually to MVCC students who exemplify the qualities and values of Moore.
