New Hartford’s Philipkoski tops Tri-Valley League honors
New Hartford standout Zach Philipkoski earned boys basketball player of the year honors in Tri-Valley League.
He also earned the TVL honor in 2022.
The senior, considered one of the top players in Class A for his all-around game, was a key component in helping the Spartans make a run through the Section III Class A tournament and earning a sectional crown for the second time in as many years. The team advanced to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association semifinals on March 17.
This season, the guard/forward led the TVL with 25.6 points per game, according to stats posted on the High School Sports Stats website. He had a season-most 38 points in mid-January against Holland Patent and eclipsed the 30-point mark six times during the season.
He also added 239 rebounds (third in the TVL), 124 assists (second in the TVL), 71 steals (second in the TVL) and 30 blocks (fifth in the TVL). He shot 80% from the free-throw line, which is among the best marks in the TVL.
Philipkoski became New Hartford’s all-time leading scorer in January surpassing Tim Welchons Jr.’s mark (1,416 points) that stood since 2002.
Philipkoski finished his New Hartford career with 1,850 points following four seasons on the varsity team. His total likely would have been more, but the 2021 season was shortened due to concerns with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Philipkoski has not publicly announced his college plans.
New Hartford finished the regular-season with a 10-10 mark and 16-11 overall. The Spartans were 8-4 in the TVL.
The TVL Coach of the Year is Central Valley Academy’s Luke Judd. He guided the Thunder to a 14-0 mark in the TVL and finished the regular-season with a 20-0 mark with help from TVL first-team selections Jaylon O’Neal (20.4 points per game, fourth-most in the TVL) and Deacon Judd (22.3 ppg, third-most in the TVL). The team’s season ended in the Section III Class B semifinals.
For boys basketball, the TVL didn’t separate honors into the Pioneer and Colonial divisions like TVL girls basketball. Instead, there are first and second team selections for the TVL boys.
The first team includes: CVA’s O’Neal and Deacon Judd; Rome Free Academy’s Uzziah Grimes; Thomas R. Proctor High School’s Oliver Rodgers; Whitesboro’s Kyle Meier; Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Eliijah Donegan.
The second team selections are: New Hartford’s Colton Suriano; Camden’s Connor Dean; Holland Patent’s Jeffrey DeWar; Oneida’s Austin DeGroat; RFA’s Surafia Norries; Proctor’s Marc Simmons.
