New Hartford boys defend Section III Class B bowling title
MATTYDALE — The New Hartford boys bowling team defended its Section III Class B title and won the Division 1 (large schools) category at the Section III Championship at Strike ‘n Spare Lanes in Mattydale last weekend.
The win for New Hartford qualified the Spartans for the state tournament March 10 at the same location.
New Hartford had a total overall pinfall for the day of 6,169 pins, which was enough to defeat Central Square, the closest competitor (and defending Division 1 and Class A champion) by 45 pins. Other local teams in Division 1 were Whitesboro in sixth and RFA in seventh.
New Hartford sophomore Trevor Cyr led the tournament for the highest six-game series of the day with 1,354 pins (an overall average of 225.67 for the tournament).
Camden won Division 2 (small schools) with a pinfall of 5,676, well ahead of second place Cortland (5,394). Locally, New York Mills was third, Adirondack fourth, Central Valley Academy was seventh, Waterville 10th, West Canada Valley 14th and Holland Patent 15th.
Local teams’ finishes by class were:
Class A — RFA was fifth.
Class B — New Hartford first, Camden second, Whitesboro third, CVA sixth.
Class C/D — New York Mills first, Adirondack second, Waterville sixth, West Canada 10th, HP 11th.
Koen Turner of Camden and Cicero-North Syracuse’s Nehemiah Bachman tied for high game in the tournament with a 278.
After Cyr for top scorers for six games among local bowlers in the top 10 were Turner in third and Ray Cyr of New Hartford in sixth.
