NEW HARTFORD — The New Hartford Board of Education has ratified the collective bargaining agreement between the school district and the New Hartford Employees’ Union (NHEU).

At a Tuesday, Nov. 15 meeting, the board voted unanimously to approve the agreement.

“We are pleased that we were able to reach an agreement with NHEU and look forward to working with its members to continue supporting our students so that each student realizes their full potential,” Superintendent of Schools Cosimo Tangorra Jr. said in a statement.

The contract covers the period of July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2025.

In addition, Tangorra provided an update to the timeline for the appointment of a new principal at Hughes Elementary.

He said that hopefully, there will be a recommendation for a probationary appointment to the position on Dec. 20.

Allen Hyde, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, said the school district advertised the position from Sept. 16 to Oct. 17, and received 16 to 18 applications.

Hyde said that this is a lower number than usual, but it is reflective of national trends. Schools across the nation are struggling with staffing shortages and are seeing fewer candidates apply for administrative, instructional and non-instructional positions.

Hyde said there was a committee meeting held Nov. 15 to discuss the interview process and questions for applicants. Committee members reviewed applications on Thursday, Nov. 17, and interviews will take place on Nov. 29.

After that, Hyde said the committee will select candidates for final interviews, which will occur Dec. 13.

The committee will then recommend two or three candidates to Tangorra, and Tangorra will recommend a candidate to the board of education. The board will then vote on Dec. 20, and the employment date will be Jan. 23, 2023.

Jason Stefanski, the former Hughes Elementary principal, stepped down effective Sept. 5. Maureen Futscher, former principal for Bradley Elementary, is currently serving as the interim principal at Hughes Elementary.
